Javier Romero started fencing foil at age 11 at San Fernando School in Madrid, Spain. At age 14, he won the epee regional tournament in his category. He later became part of the epee fencing team at the National Institute for Physical Education at the University of Madrid, where he trained with the Spanish National Team's coach Martin Kronlund. Romero and his team won Spain's national championship in the under-20 category.

Coach Romero has been fencing on and off since then, returning to the tournament and training circle five years ago as a member of the Candlewood Fencing Club in Danbury. He is ranked epee C06.
