Pioneers Finish Third At NEIFC Championships

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass.— The Sacred Heart University men's fencing team finished third in the final team standings at the 2018 NEIFC Championships at Mount Holyoke College on Saturday.

Lucas Wetmore recorded a bronze in the foil event reaching the semifinals before falling to eventual champion Noe Berger of Vassar 15-12. Julian Mallett finished sixth in the final standings. Dante Centeno was the Pioneers top finisher in the epee event, taking fifth place. Nicolo Cerminara finished right behind him in sixth.

As a team, SHU won 65 out of 88 bouts in the competition. Ahead of the Pioneers in second was MIT with 67 victories while Vassar won the three-weapon total with 72 victories.

The Pioneers foil and epee squads tied for first in the squad competitions. The saber squad finished seventh in team standings. 

SHU will compete next at the NCAA Regional at Brandeis University on Sunday, March 11.
