Men's Fencing Returns To Action At Philadelphia Invitational

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.— The Sacred Heart men's fencing team returned to competition on Saturday, opening the new year at the Philadelphia Invitational hosted by Penn.

The Pioneers picked up the win in round three with a 22-5 decision over Drew. The foil group of Tyler Endee, Julian Mallet and Lucas Wetmore kicked off the bout with a perfect 9-0 sweep. Troy Kapitzke and Dante Centeno also swept competition in the epee. Daniel Marchelitis also picked up the sweep in the saber for the win.

SHU faced tough competition in UNC (L, 17-10), Duke (L, 23-4) Penn (L, 20-7), NJIT (22-5) and a close 15-12 loss to John Hopkin. SHU led the Bluejays 7-2 after the foil portion as Wetmore picked up three wins and Mallet & Endee added two apiece. The Pioneers dropped a close 5-4 epee portion before getting swept in the Saber.

Endee led the Pioneers with a 10-8 record in the foil event and Centeno led the way with a 12-6 record in the epee. 

SHU will compete next on February 3 in a meet at Yale.
