Epee Squad Stars During Tough Day at Tradition Tournament

(Poughkeepsie, NY) - The Sacred Heart Men's Fencing Team lost two heart breaking matches by 14-13 scores to improved UNC Chapel Hill and NYU squads at the Tradition Tournament on Saturday.  The team also was defeated by Harvard 23-4, Princeton21-6, Penn State 20-7, and UPenn 19-8.  The highlight of the day was the strong effort of the epee squad, who defeated the epee squads of Penn State 6-3, UPenn 5-4, UNC 6-3 and NYU 5-4.

Leading the way were the sophomore tandem of Khris White (9-8) and Kevin Almerini (6-3).  "Kevin and Khris had great days against top competition", comments head coach Dr. Thomas Vrabel.  "They are both becoming very confident in their games and fencing aggressive, confident epee.  Our epee squad lost over ten 5-4 bouts today.  We are very close to being a dominant epee squad.  I hope that one of the other guys will be able to feed of Kevin and Khris' confidence and get up to that level as well."

"Carolina and NYU have dramatically improved and we had to have almost perfect performances to win those matches," said Vrabel.  "We just fell a touch short in both instances.  We are fielding a very young team and started six underclassmen for most of the day.  I look for us to come back strong next semester."

The Pioneers are back in action on January 19th when they take on the Yale Bulldogs at the Paine-Whitney Gym in New Haven.  The match will start at 1 PM.
