FAIRFIELD, CT - Setting The Scene: The Sacred Heart men's basketball team will travel to Cincinnati, Ohio for a meeting with the Musketeers of Xavier University at 7:30 pm on Saturday. It is the second Atlantic 10 opponent for the Pioneers. They dropped a 76-66 decision at Fordham on Wednesday.
Series vs. Xavier: This is the first meeting between these two schools in any sport.
SHU vs. the Atlantic 10: This is just the fifth game the Pioneers have played against an Atlantic 10 school and the A-10 has won the previous four. SHU is 0-2 against Fordham and 0-1 against Duquesne and Rhode Island.
Scouting the Opponent: Xavier was picked to finish second in the pre-season Atlantic 10 coaches poll. The Musketeers are off to a 2-0 stat and coming off a 101-57 route of Bowling Green on Tuesday. They opened the season with an 83-57 win over Youngstown State.
Sophomore guard Jordan Crawford leads the team in scoring, averaging 19 points per game. Senior forward Jason Love is next at 12 and is averaging a double-double with ten rebounds per contest as well. Sophomore Terrell Holloway is also scoring in double figures at 11 per game.
The Musketeers are shooting an impressive 58 percent from the floor in the first two games, including 53 percent (19-36) from three-point range.
This Date in SHU Men's Basketball History: On November 21, 1997, the Pioneers picked up their first win of the season, defeating New Hampshire College 84-71 in the Constitution Classic at the University of New Haven. John Randazzo led the way for Sacred Heart with 22 points, while Louis Frye added 20. Kurt Reis led the rebounding effort for the Pioneers with a game-high nine. SHU won the game, despite shooting just 15-31 from the free throw line (15-31). The Pioneers would lose to AIC in the championship game the next night.
Upcoming Games: The Pioneers will finish off their three-game road swing at Penn State on Thanksgiving Eve. The game will be available on WICC 600 AM. The team will then return home to the Pitt Center for two games, starting November 30 against Columbia.
Hassan Honored: Senior Corey Hassan pulled in the first weekly award for the Pioneers this season when he was named NEC Player of the Week on November 16. Hassan averaged 25.5 points, seven rebounds, and three assists a game, while shooting 61 percent from the floor, 55 percent from three (6-11) and 88 percent from the line (7-8).
