Setting The Scene: The Sacred Heart men’s basketball team opens the 2009-10 season on Friday when it plays the opening game in the inaugural Connecticut 6 Classic, featuring six of the seven Division I basketball teams from the State. The Pioneers will take on Yale in the first game at 5:30, followed by Fairfield and Central CT at 7:30, and then Quinnipiac and Hartford wrap things up at 9:30.
Against the Field: The Pioneers have a 62-59 all-time record against the field of the Connecticut 6. SHU is 34-18 against Quinnipiac, 10-5 against Hartford, 16-28 against CCSU, 2-6 against Yale, and 0-2 against Fairfield.
Series vs. Yale: This is the ninth all-time meeting between these two schools and Yale holds a 6-2 edge.

SHU vs. the Ivy League: Sacred Heart has a 9-16 record against Ivy League foes but has won four straight and seven of the last eight meetings. The Pioneers have faced Columbia (3-4), Cornell (1-1), Harvard (3-5) and Yale (2-6). SHU will take on Brown for the first time last this season. The Pioneers have never faced Dartmouth, Penn and Princeton.
Upcoming Games: The Pioneers will open at home on Sunday when they host Lafayette at 4:00 p.m. and then hit the road for three straight, starting November 18 at Fordham.
Season Openers: Sacred Heart is 23-21 in season openers, but 1-9 since moving to Division I in 1999. The Pioneers have lost seven straight openers, since beating Stony Brook 76-71 to start the 2001-02 season.
Winning Ways: The Pioneers finished last season with its third straight winning record, ending with a 17-14 mark. The last time SHU teams had three consecutive winning campaigns was from the 1987-88 season through 1989-90.
Winning Ways Part II: Over the last three years the Pioneer men’s basketball team has more wins than any other Division I team in the State of Connecticut, outside of UConn. SHU has 53 wins over that time period, compared to 49 for Central Connecticut, 44 for Quinnipiac and Fairfield and 38 for Hartford. UConn is way out in front in that race with 72.
