FAIRFIELD, CT - Sophomore Andres Torres scored a game-high 15 points, while Morgan Sabia added 14 to lead the University of Hartford men's basketball team to a 59-55 road win over Sacred Heart University Sunday afternoon.
Hartford, 4-7, jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first four minutes, thanks to treys from Morgan Sabia and Jaret von Rosenberg. Joey Henley (Kent, WA) got the Pioneers within 12-6 with 12:07 to go in the first half with a layup. That bucket was the 1000th career point for the sixth-year senior. He finished the game with ten points.
Another von Rosenberg three with 9:26 to go in the half boosted the Hawk lead to 11 at 21-10, but the Pioneers made a strong run to cut the lead to 21-18 with 7:16 to go. Junior Ryan Litke (Windsor, CT) had a pair of free throws and a fastbreak jumper to lead the charge. A three from Andres Torres with 1:21 to go put Hartford back up nine, but Litke canned a trey with :32 to cut the deficit to 31-25 at the intermission.
Chauncey Hardy (Middletown, CT), who spent nearly 13 minutes on the bench with two fouls in the first half, knocked home a three to start the second half to get the Pioneers back within three.
Another Hardy three with 6:50 left got SHU within two at 50-48. Ryon Howard drained a bucket with 5:06 left as the shot clock was winding down to tie it at 50-50. A morgan Sabia dunk at the other end put the Hawks back up. Michael Turned made it a four point lead with a slashing layup with 3:45 to go. Litke made it a two-point game with 1:42 left with a 15-footer.
The Pioneers, now 3-4, had two chances to tie in the next minute but a turnover and a missed three, followed by a rebounding foul put Anthony Minor at the line with :27 left. He drained both chances to put the Hawks ahead 56-52. Another SHU foul after a missed Hardy layup resulted in Sabia canning one of two free throw chances and a five point Hartford lead.
