CORAL GABLES, FL - Guards Robert Hite and Guillermo Diaz scored 16 points apiece to lead the University of Miami to a 63-57 win over visiting Sacred Heart University in a non-conference men's basketball game Monday night.
Miami, 8-6, led 29-21 at the intermission thanks to holding Sacred Heart to just 30 percent shooting and forced ten turnovers in the first half.
The Hurricanes came out firing in the second half and extended their lead to 39-23 just 3:30 into the second half thanks to a trio of three by Guillermo Diaz and Anthony Harris. Sophomores Gene Pettway and Brice Brooks came off the bench and jumpstarted the SHU offense. Brooks scored six of the next ten Pioneer points and Pettway had an acrobatic dunk that resulted in a three-point play that put the Pioneers within five at 43-38 with just over eight minutes to play.
A Brooks layup with 6:30 left cut the Hurricane lead to three at 45-42, but the Pioneers could get no closer. Diaz drained a three for Miami on its next possession to push the lead to six, and after a missed three at the other end by SHU, Dennis Clemente converted a layup to give Miami a 50-42 edge that they were able to nurse home.
Senior Kibwe Trim led the Pioneers with 17 points and ten rebounds, his fifth double-double of the season. Pettway finished with 13 points. Drew Shubik, forced to play the point due to an injury to Tavio Hobson contributed four points, nine rebounds and seven assists.
The loss dropped the Pioneers to 4-7. They will face Wagner College at home on Saturday in a 4:00 p.m. start as part of a doubleheader with the women's team.
