FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Sacred Heart Head Men's Basketball Coach Anthony Latina announced on Thursday that Mario Matasovic, Charles Tucker Jr., and Sean Hoehn have been named team captains for the upcoming 2017-18 season.
"Mario, Cha Cha, and Sean consistently exemplify the core values of our program and have earned this honor," said Latina. "I'm extremely pleased with their leadership, both on and off the court. I believe they're ready to take on this responsibility, and their leadership will prove vital to the success of our program this season."
Matasovic averaged 5.9 points and 3.4 rebounds per game last season, appearing in 22 games. He had his first double-digit scoring effort as a Pioneer on Jan. 26 with 13 points, adding six rebounds while shooting 80% from the field. Matasovic had a career-high 19 points and eight rebounds in SHU's win over St. Francis Brooklyn on Feb. 9, shooting 70% from the field.
Tucker led SHU, and was fourth in the Northeast Conference, in assists with 4.1 per game in the 2016-17 season. He was also fourth in the NEC with a 1.43 assist/turnover ratio. Tucker scored a season-high 19 points against Saint Francis U on Dec. 31, going 8-for-8 at the free throw line while adding a season-high nine assists. He had nine other games with at least six assists last season.
Hoehn nearly doubled his scoring average last season from his freshman year, averaging eight points per game while shooting 35.2% from the three-point line. He also shot 82.9% from the foul line. Hoehn scored a season-high 17 points four times last season, three in wins against Fordham, Central Connecticut, and Fairleigh Dickinson. He was 5-for-6 from the three-point line twice last season.
Sacred Heart opens the 2017-18 season on Coach Bike Court at the Pitt Center on Friday, Nov. 10 against Holy Cross.
