Setting the Scene... Sacred Heart looks to earn a split of this weekend's games at the Pitt Center as the Wagner Seahawks come to Fairfield.
Last Time Out... SHU moved to 3-4 in the NEC Thursday night after an 86-75 loss to first-place Mount St. Mary's at the Pitt Center. After trailing 51-27 at halftime, the Pioneers opened the second half on a 26-5 run, scoring 19 straight points to make it 56-53 with 12:05 remaining. The Mountaineers pulled away with a 9-2 run to go up by 10, 65-55, with 10:00 to play. Quincy McKnight led all scorers with 26 points. Chris Robinson added a season-high 14 points.
All-Time vs. Wagner... The Seahawks lead the all-time series 21-14. Wagner holds a 9-8 advantage in games played at Sacred Heart.
Last Meeting... SHU was within three points of Wagner with 3:27 to play on Jan. 7 at Spiro Sports Center, but a Seahawks 10-0 run gave Wagner a 75-64 win. Matej Buovac led the Pioneers with 15 points, making 5-of-8 three-pointers. De'von Barnett added 14 points. Quincy McKnight scored all 12 of his points in the second half. Wagner's Corey Henson led all players with 24 points and seven assists.
McKnight's Making Buckets... Sophomore guard Quincy McKnight had his eighth 20-point effort of the season Thursday night, scoring a game-high 26 points against Mount St. Mary's. In the last five games, McKnight is averaging 26.2 points per game with four games of over 20 points. He's shooting 51.6% from the field and 83.8% from the foul line in those five games as well. McKnight is tied for the NEC lead in scoring at 20.3 points per game.
Lopez Double-Doubles Up... Joseph Lopez recorded his eighth double-double of the season Thursday night with 11 points and 10 rebounds against Mount St. Mary's. It was his third consecutive double-double and his sixth in the last eight games. Lopez has excelled against NEC competition, averaging 14.3 points and 10.0 rebounds per game while shooting nearly 60% from the field.
That Extra Pass... Sacred Heart leads the NEC in assists, averaging 15.25 per game. SHU had it's stretch of five consecutive games with a positive assist-to-turnover ratio snapped on Thursday when the Pioneers had 15 assists and 16 turnovers. The Pioneers' 23 helpers at Bryant on Jan. 14 were a season-high. Sacred Heart is averaging 17 assists per game in NEC play, and has had at least 15 assists in each of the last 10 games.
Scouting the Seahawks... Wagner has lost two of its last three games since it last played the Pioneers, moving its record to 7-10 on the season and 3-4 in the NEC. The Seahawks lost 76-69 at LIU Brooklyn Thursday night. Corey Henson led Wagner with 17 points and six assists against the Blackbirds. Wagner tied the game 67-67 with 2:41 remaining, but LIU Brooklyn went on an 8-0 run over the next 1:47 to take a 75-67 lead. Henson leads Wagner in scoring, averaging 14.1 points per game.
