Pioneers Lose 94-78 to Radford

LAS VEGAS, Nevada – Sacred Heart let up a season-high 55 first half points on their way to a fifth consecutive loss, 94-78, to the Radford Highlanders Sunday afternoon at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. Pioneers fall to 2-11 this season, while Radford improves to 7-4.

After letting up a season-high 55 first half points and 27 point halftime deficit, the Pioneers battled back to within eight points with 2:30 left but could not reach any closer.

Louis Montes (Brockton, MA) led the way for SHU with 22 points on 7-of-13 shooting, while Mostafa Abdel Latif (Alexandria, Egypt) notched his first career double-double with a career-high 15 points and 13 rebounds. Juniors Phil Gaetano (Wallingford, CT) and Steve Glowiak (New Britain, CT) each chipped in with 12 points.

R.J. Price made six threes for Radford on his way to a career-high 30 points, while Rashun Davis added 20 points on 6-of-9 shooting.

Louis Montes came out of the gate firing for Sacred Heart, making his first three shots and scoring the Pioneers' first eight points. Montes knocked down a free throw, an elbow jumper, and a three-pointer from the right side and then a nice baby hook to even Radford at eight with 17:15 remaining in the first half. From there, Radford slowly took control of the action with Kion Brown hitting a lay-up to give the Highlanders a 17-10 lead with 14:47 remaining. Redshirt junior Chris Evans (Stamford, CT) went coast-to-coast for a lay-up to stem a Radford run and make the score 25-15 about hallway through the first half. Highlanders' leading scorer Jevonte Green put together a steal and dunk combo to give Radford a 41-24 lead with 4:29 left in the half.

Radford closed the first half on a 19-4 run to take a 55-28 lead into halftime. Price knocked down consecutive threes to end the first, including a corner three-ball at the buzzer.

The Pioneers were much sharper in the second half, starting the period on a 10-2 run to get within 19 at 57-38. Abdel Latif and Walton both made lay-ups; while Gaetano knocked down a step-back three to give Sacred Heart some much needed momentum.  Sacred Heart cut it to 14 on three made free throws by Steve Glowiak to cut the Radford lead to 60-46 with 14:39 remaining. Freshman De'Von Barnett (Waldorf, MD) hit a lay-up to the cut the lead to 12 with 13:14 remaining. Back-to-back three-pointers from Glowiak and Gaetano put SHU once again within 11 at 82-71 with 4:12 left. Barnett put Sacred Heart the closest with another lay-up, this time with a made free throw to put SHU within eight, 84-76, with 2:30 left. Rashun Davis responded for Radford, knocking down a backbreaking three-pointer to end the SHU comeback for good.

Pioneers will play the winner of Florida Gulf Coast and Florida A&M tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 EST to wrap up their four game road trip.
