Pioneers Return Home to Host Lafayette Saturday

Setting the Scene... The Sacred Heart men's basketball comes home after a five game road trip to play host to the Lafayette Leopards at the Pitt Center Saturday afternoon.
Last Time Out... Sacred Heart won its second game of the season 73-59 at Hofstra Wednesday night. Junior sharp-shooter Steve Glowiak knocked down six threes to lead the Pioneers with 18 points. The Pioneers recorded 23 assists, including 11 from Phil Gaetano, compared to just 3 team turnovers. The 23:3 assist to turnover ratio against Hofstra is the single best in the country so far this season. Along with Glowiak, Evan Kelley (14), and Chris Evans (13), also scored in double digits.
Lafayette Series Notes... Tied at two wins each.
- SHU is 2-0 at home against the Leopards, winning in 2009-10, 81-70, and in 2011-12, 84-79.
- Last season, Lafayette defeated the Pioneers, 72-70 in the Kirby Sports Center. Sophomore Bryce Scott drilled a three-pointer with two seconds left to lift the Leopards. Steve Glowiak scored 14 in the loss for Sacred Heart.
Pioneers vs. the Patriot League... This is the Pioneers 27th meeting with a Patriot League opponent.
- SHU is 12-14 against the league and has lost six of its last seven meetings.
- This is the third match-up against the conference this season with the Pioneers looking for their first win. SHU fell at Holy Cross, 122-118, and at Lehigh, 76-64.
- The Pioneers have faced Army (3-3), Holy Cross (4-6), Lafayette (2-2) and Lehigh (3-3).
Scouting Lafayette... The Leopards come into this afternoon on a two game winning streak. The Leopards defeated Penn 79-76 at home on November, 30th, followed by a 77-65 victory over the Wagner Seahawks on Monday night. Even in defeat Lafayette has played tough, losing by just three against Yale, as well as back-to-back overtime losses to Princeton and NJIT. Like the Pioneers, Lafayette has four players scoring in double digits. They are led by junior guard Seth Hinrichs, who is averaging a team-high 20.9 points per game this season. Hinrichs tied a career-high with 28 points in the Leopards' three point win over Penn.
Balanced Scoring... Sacred Heart has four players averaging double figures in scoring through eight games this season, and is second in the NEC in scoring with an average of 74.9 points per game. Evan Kelley leads the Pioneers with 14.8 points per game. Chris Evans is scoring 13.9 points per game, having scored in double figures in five of the last six games. Louis Montes is putting up 11.1 points per game while Steve Glowiak is averaging 11.6 points a contest off the bench.
That Gaetano is Scoring... Junior guard Phil Gaetano is averaging a career- high 8.6 points per game this season, to go along with his usual output of assists (5.25/gm). He set a new career-high in scoring at Boston College, putting in 16 points as he made four three-pointers. Over the last four games, Gaetano is shooting 46.4% from the field and 52.2% from the three-point arc. Gaetano is currently fourth in the NEC in three-point shooting at 45.5%. In his first two seasons at Sacred Heart, Gaetano averaged 4.5 points per game.
Glowiak From Three.. Steve Glowiak made six three-pointers Wednesday at Hofstra as he led Sacred Heart with 18 points. Glowiak has drilled eleven three-pointers in the past two games and has scored in double digits in three consecutive games (15,17,18). He is currently second in the NEC in three-point field goal percentage at 48.9% (23-47).
Pioneers Heating Up... In its last three games, Sacred Heart is shooting 44.6 percent from behind the arc. The Pioneers have drilled 29-65 three-pointers in the three games and have increased their shooting percentage in each contest. In Sacred Heart's first five games, they shot 30.8% from three-point land, including a 5-26 performance in its opener against Fairfield.
Kelley Back on Track... Following a 2-12 shooting performance in the overtime loss to Boston College, Evan Kelley has put in double digit points in the past two games. Kelley made 5-of-10 shots for 10 points at Lehigh, and then knocked down 5-9 shots for 14 points in the win over Hofstra. Kelley is the Pioneers' top scorer, averaging 14.8 points per game. He is eighth in the NEC in scoring and 13th in field goal percentage. Kelley scored a career-high 32 points in Sacred Heart's 122-118 double-overtime loss at Holy Cross on Nov. 13.
