BRIDGEPORT, Conn – On a night of numerous firsts for the Sacred Heart men's basketball team, it was not the first ever victory over Fairfield as the Pioneers were dropped 67-54 to their crosstown rival Saturday night at the Webster Bank Arena. Sacred Heart drops to 0-1 on the season and 0-5 all-time against the Stags.
In the loss, senior forward Louis Montes (Brockton, MA) scored a team high 19 points on 5 of 15 shooting. Redshirt Junior Evan Kelley (Norwalk, CT) added eight points, while junior Phil Gaetano (Wallingford, CT) and freshman Leo Vincent (Bensalem, PA) each chipped in with seven. As a team, Sacred Heart shot a dismal 24.6 percent from the field and 19 percent from behind the arc.
For the Stags, Maurice Barrow led the way with 14 points, while Marcus Gilbert added 13. Fairfield shot a stellar 51 percent from the field. FU blocked ten Sacred Heart shots.
SHU built a 16-6 lead to start the game behind a hot shooting Leo Vincent who began the game 2 of 2 from the field before missing his final 6 shots. Fairfield responded to the early SHU lead with a 27-4 run of their own to seize momentum and take control of the game. Fairfield ended the half on a 30-10 run to take a 36-26 lead into halftime. Sacred Heart never cut the Fairfield lead to below double digits in the second half.
It was more of the same in the second frame with Fairfield running out of the gate on a 10-1 run before a 15 foot jumper by redshirt freshman Cole Walton (Bellevue, WA) halted the barrage. Walton scored six points on three of four shooting in his first game as a Pioneer.
SHU hits the road on Wednesday night for a showdown with the Holy Cross Crusaders in Worcester.
Notes: It was Head Coach Anthony Latina's first game at the helm of the Pioneers. The Pioneers defeated Yale on overtime in last season's Connecticut Six Classic.
