Pioneers Win Fourth Straight Game, Defeat Laval 79-70
QUEBEC CITY – Led by 13 points from Evan Kelley (Norwalk, Conn.), the Sacred Heart men's basketball team defeated Universite Laval 79-70 Thursday night. It is the fourth win in four games for the Pioneers during their Montreal trip.
De'von Barnett (Waldorf, Md.) and Chris Evans (Stamford, Conn.) each scored 12 points. Barnett was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field. Louis Montes (Brockton, Mass.) and Cole Walton (Bellevue, Wash.) scored nine points apiece.
Sacred Heart trailed Laval 19-17 after the first quarter, but used a 7-1 run capped off by a Jordan Gleason (Watervliet, N.Y.) three to take a 28-27 lead with 6:27 left in the half. The Pioneers led by as much as nine late in the second quarter when a Tevin Falzon (Newton, Mass.) jumper made the score 45-36. Laval scored the last five points of the half to cut the Sacred Heart lead to four, 45-41, at halftime.
After Laval made a three on its opening possession of the third quarter, the Pioneers went on a 7-1 run highlighted by back-to-back Kelley baskets to take a 52-45 advantage with 6:11 left in the period. Sacred Heart took its first double-digit lead of the game with 2:55 to play in the third on a Steve Glowiak (New Britain, Conn.) basket that made the score 59-49. The Pioneers pulled away in the fourth quarter with an 8-0 run, highlighted by an Evans three-point play, to take a 79-63 lead with 2:42 to play.
Sacred Heart shot 40.5% from the field Thursday night and outrebounded Laval 48-38. The Pioneers also forced 23 turnovers.
