Men's Hoop Heading North to Canada
FAIRFIELD, CT (August 9, 2013) - The Sacred Heart men's basketball team will wrap up their summer vacation with a trip north of the boarder later this month. The Pioneers, under new head coach Anthony Latina will be traveling to Canada for a week's worth of workouts and exhibition games on August 17th through 24th.
The Pioneers will play five games during the stretch while visiting Montreal and Quebec City. The trip will give Latina and his team the chance to not only get some game action under their belts but also provide a great team bonding experience for the Pioneers.
Sacred Heart will welcome back three starters to the line-up in senior forward Louis Montes (Brockton, MA) and junior guards Phil Gaetano (Wallingford, CT) and Steve Glowiak (New Britain, CT). Montes is poised for a breakp-out season as the Pioneers' top-returning scorer from a year ago. He averaged 14.4 points per game and also led the Pioneers in rebounding at 6.2 per game. Gaetano was second in the nation in assists running the point for the Pioneers and averaging 7.9 assists per game. Glowiak was one of the Northeast Conference's top three-point threats, knocking down 61 triples last year.
Coach Latina will get the chance to see how his five new faces will blend in with his team during this trip. SHU will get their first look at 6-11 center Cole Walton (Bellevue, WA) in game action during these exhibitions. Walton redshirted last season as a freshman. This year's recruiting class of freshmen guards Jordan Gleason (Watervliet, NY) and Leo Vincent (Bensalem, PA) and freshmen forwards De'von Barnett (Waldorf, MD) and Eyimofe Edukugho (Warri Delta State, Nigeria) will get their first game action as well.
This Canadian tour will also feature the return of r-junior guards Evan Kelley (Norwalk, CT) and Chris Evans (Stamford, CT) to the court. Evans missed all of 2012-13 to a knee injury while Kelley was forced out of the line-up for the year after just two games.
