FAIRFIELD, CT (February 13, 2013) – Sacred Heart University head basketball coach Anthony Latina announced the non-conference schedule for the upcoming 2013-14 season. The Pioneers will once again open their season in the Connecticut 6 Classic, renewing their cross-town rivalry with the Fairfield Stags.
"We are excited to renew rivalries with peer institutions like Fairfield, Fordham and Boston College," Latina said. "We also look forward to continuing our series with instate rivals Yale and Hartford."
Latina will make his head coaching debut on Saturday, November 9th as the Pioneers open the year for the fifth-straight season in the Connecticut 6 Classic. This year's event is schedule to be played at the Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport. The annual tripleheader will once again feature SHU, Fairfield, Quinnipiac, Central Connecticut State, Hartford and Yale. The Pioneers will face Fairfield in this year's edition. SHU is 3-1 in the CT6 Classic, beating Yale 85-82 in overtime last season to kick-off the year. The Pioneers will play every team in the CT6 field this season with the exception of Quinnipiac.
The Pioneers have three home games scheduled during non-conference play, hosting Brown on Saturday, November 16th, Lafayette on Saturday, December 7th and Hartford, December 15th. Sacred Heart will also take on familiar opponents to the schedule with stops at Holy Cross on Wednesday, November 13th, at Yale Tuesday, November 19th, at Lehigh Sunday, December 1st and at New Hampshire, Saturday, January 4th.
Back on the schedule in 2013-14 will be games at Fordham on Saturday, November 23rd and at Boston College on Tuesday, November 26th. The Pioneers last faced Fordham back in 2010-11 and last took on the BC Eagles in 2011-12. SHU will face Hofstra for the first time on the Division I level next season. The two schools met five times during the Division II days, the last coming in 1973-74. The Pioneers will travel to meet the Pride on Wednesday, December 4th.
The Pioneers will play four games as part of the 2013 Las Vegas Classic tournament from December 18th through 22nd. SHU gets things started with a trip to California to face Santa Clara on December 18th before heading to Vegas. The Pioneers take on UNLV on December 20th and will face one of the big stories from last season's NCAA Tournament in Florida Gulf Coast University on December 22nd. They round out the four-game tournament facing either Radford or Florida A&M on December 23rd.
