BRIDGEPORT, CT - A Memorial Mass celebrating the life of former Sacred Heart University assistant baseball coach Vinny Marro will be held on Wednesday, July 23 at 10 a.m. in St. Peter Church, 695 Colorado Ave. in Bridgeport. Marro passed away last week of natural causes at age 70.
Marro served as a Pioneer assistant for six years under both Terry Toigo and Nick Giaquinto. He also worked as assistant women's basketball and baseball coaches at the University of Bridgeport.
An All-State outfielder in high school, Marro attended UB on a baseball scholarship. Later he was a mainstay in the semi-pro Bridgeport Senior City League for over 30 years as a player, coach, and umpire.
He was a fixture at Sacred Heart athletic contests in recent years and always had a kind word and smile on his face for everyone he encountered.
He is survived by three children, Tracey Pierson of Stratford, Vincent J. Marro Jr. and Shelley Cavallaro, both of Shelton; two sisters, and Marie Jovanelly of California, and Angela Kman of Bridgeport; five grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Interment in St. Michael Cemetery in Stratford will follow the memorial service.
