Drowne and Phillips Grab NEC Honors

FAIRFIELD, CT - Junior Mike Drowne (South Hadley, MA) was named then the Akadema/Northeast Conference Co-Player of the Week for baseball today, while freshman Hunter Phillips (Monroe, CT) was named the Rookie of the Week.
Drowne was 10-18 (.556) in a 3-2 week for the Pioneers. He had two doubles, a triple, a homer and four RBI. He walked twice, didn't record a strikeout, and scored 13 runs. He was 3-3 in stolen bases and played spotless outfield, with nine putouts and an assist.
He led off the bottom of the first for the Pioneers in the opening game of the series against LIU on Friday by launching his first homer of the season over the left centerfield wall. In the doubleheader sweep of the Blackbirds on Saturday, Drowne was 4-7 with a triple, two RBI, six runs scored and two stolen bases. Drowne drew a leadoff walk in the seventh inning of a tie game on Saturday and came around to score the game-winner in a 5-4 triumph.
Pinch hitting in a non-league mid-week contest against MAAC leader Manhattan, Drowne hit safely and came around to score the first of his 13 runs.
He is currently second on the team with a .402 average and is 13-14 in stolen bases.
Phillips was 6-18 (.333) in five games last week, and was 6-15 in four games against LIU over the weekend. Phillips helped the Pioneers to a 13-9 win in Sunday's finale by going 3-5 with two doubles, a run scored and a career-best six RBI. He was also perfect in the field with ten putouts, ten assists, and helped the Pioneer infield turn three double plays.
The week helped the freshman raise his average to .274. He is second on the team with 12 doubles.
