FAIRFIELD, CT - Freshman Mike Olszyk (Hamden, CT) was named the Akadema/Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week today, helping the Pioneers to a three-win week from both the batter's box and the mound.
The 6-foot-6 freshman posted a .533 (8-for-15) batting average and blasted three home runs while manning the designated hitter's spot in Sacred Heart's lineup. Olszyk hit a three-run bomb before nailing down a save by pitching a perfect ninth inning in an 8-6 non-league win over Nutmeg rival Yale.
On his way to a 1.200 slugging percentage, Olszyk went deep in both the first and third games of SHU's rain-shortened three-game NEC set with Central Connecticut State. His three-run blast staked the Pioneers to a 5-0 lead in the first inning of an eventual 18-4 victory. The rookie also smashed a solo shot to lead off the fifth inning of SHU's 9-5 win the next day.
Olszyk's selection to the Akadema NEC Honor Roll means SHU players have now won all three of the weekly awards this season (Player, Pitcher, Rookie).
