Steve Tedesco (Mission Viejo, CA) posted a pair of game winning hits in extra innings against Monmouth in a NEC double header Friday afternoon at Harbor Yard. He launched a walk-off solo homerun in the bottom of the tenth in the twinbill finale to secure the sweep of the Hawks with a 4-3 victory. Tedesco also provided a walk-off single in the eighth inning of a 6-5 game one win.
Sacred Heart (27-22, 18-9 NEC) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the opening game as Tedesco reached base with a one-out single and quickly stole second. He would come around to score on a bloop hit from Jeff Heppner (Aqubogue, NY) for the catcher's 51st RBI of 2010. The Pioneers extended their advantage to 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth after leadoff hits from John Murphy (Seymour, CT) and Heppner. JJ Edwards (Endwell, NY) supplied the RBI knock with a single to left field.
Monmouth (20-22, 13-14 NEC) knotted the game in the next half inning as they finally touched up SHU starter Jared Balbach (Pine Bush, NY) with a two-run double. The Pioneers retook the lead in the fifth with an unearned run thanks to a RBI single from Murphy. The Hawks needed to score at least one run to stay alive in the top of the seventh and they got it immediately on a solo homerun from O'Neill. Sacred Heart committed two errors later in the inning as Monmouth carried a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh.
The Hawks returned the favor to SHU in the next half inning as a pair of fielding miscues allowed the Pioneers to tie the game and send it to extras. Sacred Heart loaded the bases in the eighth and got a walk off single to right field from Tedesco to secure the 6-5 win. Chris Dionisio (Smithtown, NY) came on in relief for Sacred Heart and tossed 1.1 perfect innings to pick up his second pitching victory of 2010.
Sacred Heart game two starter Corey Corcoran (Norwich, CT) and Monmouth counterpart Pat Light each had great outings before struggling in the seventh. Mike Casale allowed the Hawks to jump out on top early in game one with a first inning leadoff triple, later scoring on a Nick Pulsonetti single. Tedesco took his turn in the bottom half of the frame with a triple of his own, crossing the plate on a Murphy sacrifice fly to knot the game at one. Casale gave Monmouth a 2-1 advantage in the sixth with a solo shot to left field.
The Pioneers evened the score with their backs against the wall in the seventh as Hunter Phillips (Monroe, CT) drove in Dave Boisture (Highland Mills, NY) to keep the SHU hope of a sweep alive. The Hawks leap frogged back in front in the top of the eighth as Pulsonetti ripped a two-out double down the left field line. Sacred Heart twice was down to their last strike in the eighth as Rob Griffith (Lake Ronkonkoma, NY) was hit by a 1-2 pitch and Boisture worked out a bases loaded walk to tie the game after falling behind in the count 0-2.
Tedesco delivered the walk-off homerun, his fifth dinger of 2010, to lead off the tenth inning and give Sacred Heart the 4-3 win. SHU has now won 13 of the last 15 games and secured its fourth straight NEC series victory. The Pioneers will go for the sweep of Monmouth tomorrow at 1:00 pm during senior day at Harbor Yard.
