BRIDGEPORT, CT - Junior Chris Barthel (Northford, CT) allowed just one run over seven innings and senior Rob Tencza (Meriden, CT) drove in four runs to lead the Sacred Heart baseball team to an 11-1 win over visiting Wagner in a Northeast Conference game Sunday night.
Barthel, making just his second start of the season, scattered eight Wagner hits over his seven innings. He struck out eight and walked two, improving to 2-0 on the season.
SHU, 22-23 overall and 12-7 in the NEC, took a 2-0 lead in the first when Steve Tedesco (Mission Viejo, CA) was hit by a pitch, went to second on a wild pitch and stole third. Jovan Rodriguez (Bronx, NY) then walked and stole second. Tedesco scored on a ground out by Bobby McKee (Massapequa, NY) and Rodriguez scored on a single by Jeff Hanson (Woodstock, NY).
Wagner, 14=29 and 8-12, got its lone run off Barthel in the top of the second. Barthel walked the first batter. Then back-to-back singles loaded the bases with no one out. Barthel struck out the next two batters, but Wagner catcher Chris Drechsel singled to left to score one run. Rodriguez made a strong throw home from the outfield to cut Matt Nastrianni trying to score from second.
The Pioneers broke the game open with seven runs in the bottom of the seventh. Tencza had the big blow in the frame with a bases-loaded triple.
The win moved the Pioneers into third place in the NEC standings, one game ahead of Monmouth in fourth. SHU will travel to Monmouth for a four-game series starting Thursday.
