HAMDEN, CT - Senior Jeff Hanson (Woodstock, NY) knocked home the winning run with a single in the seventh inning that scored Steve Tedesco (Mission Viejo, CA), and Chris Zaccherio threw 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to help the Sacred Heart baseball team defeat Quinnipiac 7-6 in game two of a Northeast Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
Quinnipiac, 14-28 overall and 7-12 in the NEC, exploded for six runs in the bottom of the third inning off Pioneer starter Matt Fitton (Norwich, CT). Ben Farina drove home two of the runs with a double with two outs off Zaccherio, who came on with one out in the inning and four runs already in.
The Pioneers, 21-22-1 and 11-7, put three on the board in the top of the fourth with two out. Hanson doubled and Tyler Santos walked to put two on. Jeff Heppner followed with his 11th home run of the season. The blow also gave Heppner 52 RBI this season, breaking the Pioneer's single-season record of 51 set by Bill Packer back in 1982.
Senior Paul Schmidt hit his second home run of the doubleheader, and his seventh of the season, in the sixth inning to tie the game at 6-6. Santos and Heppner, who had both singled, scored ahead of Schmidt's homer.
Tedesco walked to lead off the seventh and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mike Drowne. Phil Tantillo flied to left for the second out, before Hanson delivered his single to center to win the game.
Zaccherio tossed a one-two-three seventh to even his season mark at 3-3.
The two teams will complete the four-game set Sunday at noon.
