HAMDEN, CT - Junior Steve Tedesco (Mission Viejo, CA) drove home the go-ahead run in the sixth inning and senior Chris Zaccherio (Manhasset, NY) pitched two scoreless innings ot relief to lead the Sacred Heart baseball team to an 8-6 win in the opening game of a Northeast Conference doubleheader at Quinnipiac Saturday afternoon.
Quinnipiac, 14-27 overall and 7-11 in the NEC, took a 2-0 lead in the first inning off SHU starter Jared Balbach (Pine Bush, NY) thanks to a two-run homer by Michael Marmo.
The Pioneers, 20-22-1 and 10-7, got one back in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly by Phil Tantillo (Blue Point, NY) that scored Tedesco who had singled.
A two-run single by Gabe Guerino in the third put the Bobcats up 4-1. Paul Schmidt cut the gap to 4-2 with a solo homer to center in the top of the fourth for the Pioneers, and Mike Drowne (S. Hadley, MA) blasted a solo shot of his own in the fifth to make it 4-3.
Another ball left the yard when Chris Magani took Balach deep to put the Bobcats back up by two, 5-3.
The Pioneers took the lead in the top of the sixth with a four-run inning. Tyler Santos (Johnson City, NY) led off the frame by reaching on an error by the Quinnipiac third baseman. With one out, Schmidt doubled to center to plate Santos. Robert Griffith (Lake Ronkonkoma, NY) singled up the middle to drive home Schmidt and went to third on a single to right by Hunter Phillips (Monroe, CT). Tedesco then delivered his single to put the Pioneers ahead 6-5, and a wild pitch scored Phillips with the seventh run.
After Ben Farina homered to lead off the Quinnipiac sixth, Zaccherio came on in relief. He set down all six Bobcats he faced in the game to earn his third save of the year and give Balbach his team-leading seventh win.
