BRIDGEPORT, CT - Junior Nate Stone drove in seven runs, including a grand slam home run in the fifth inning, to lead the Army baseball team to an 18-5 win over Sacred Heart University Thursday afternoon.
The Black Knights, now 33-11, jumped on SHU starter Mike Milazzo for four runs in each of the first two innings to take an 8-0 lead. Stone had a two-run double in the first inning, and Walker Gorham had a three-run single with two outs in the second.
Sacred Heart, 7-32, got four back in the bottom of the third with four straight singles to start the inning off Army starter Ben Mayhew. Freshman Jay Monti, who had three hits for the Pioneers, had an RBI double in the inning while freshman Pete Kandybowicz had an RBI single. The Monti double chased Mayhew and Monte Jones came in from the pen to close the inning and pitch a scoreless fourth.
Army got a two-run double from Justin Long in the fourth inning and the Stone grand slam in the fifth gave the visitors a 14-4 lead.
Monti hit a home run for the Pioneers in the sixth inning before the Black Knights exploded for four more in the top of the seventh. Freshman Nolan Cork had the highlight of the inning with a long two-run homer to left, his fourth of the season.
Gorham finished the game a perfect four-for-four for the Black Knights with four RBI. Milan Dinga had a pair of hits and four runs scored. Freshman Logan Brannon was credited with the win for the Black Knights, allowing just the Monti homer in two innings of work.
