FAIRFIELD, CT - Senior Phil Tantillo (Blue Point, NY) had four hits and four RBI, while senior Jeff Hanson (Woodstock, NY) and freshman Mike Olszyk (Hamden, CT) each launched long homers to help the Sacred Heart baseball team defeat Fairfield 20-13 on Tuesday.
Fairfield, 17-20, scored three times off SHU starter James Ineson (Milford, CT) in the first two innings to take a 3-0 lead. Olszyk got the Pioneers back within a run with a two-run bomb to dead center in the bottom of the second. Tyler Santos, who had led off the inning with a double, scored in front of Olszyk.
Tantillo drove home his first run with a double in the third. SHU later took a 6-4 lead in the fourth with help from the Stags. Olszyk was hit by a pitch to start the frame and Paul Schmidt followed with a walk. Both runners advanced on a passed ball and later scored on RBI groundouts.
The Stags tied it up in the top of the fifth, but SHU answered struck back in the bottom on an RBI single by Jeff Heppner to lead 7-6.
Ineson gave way to reliever Bobby Shepherd (Groton, CT) in the sixth inning and the freshman pitched a perfect sixth, striking out two. The Pioneers, 19-21-1, opened the lead to 11-6 in the bottom of the sixth thanks to an RBI single by Tantillo and a three-run blast by Hanson to right center.
The Pioneers put the game away in the bottom of the eighth, scoring nine times and sending 13 men to the plate. Tantillo and Santos drove home a pair of runs each in the frame.
The Pioneer rookie hurlers, Ineson and Shepherd, earned their first win and save respectively in the game.
