W. LONG BRANCH, NJ - Senior outfielder Paul Schmidt (Amityville, NY) was a perfect 5-5, smacked three homers, and set a new school record with ten RBI to lead the Sacred Heart baseball team to a 15-6 Northeast Conference win over Monmouth on Sunday. It was the third win in the four-game series for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers, 18-21-1 overall and 9-6 in the NEC, exploded for five runs in the top of the first inning. With one out seniors Phil Tantillo (Blue Point, NY) and Jeff Hanson (Woodstock, NY) singled. Jeff Heppner reached on catches interference to loade the bases and Mike Olszyk walked to force in a run. Schmidt followed with a grand slam to center to stake starting pitcher Corey Corcoran (Norwich, CT) to the five-run lead.
Monmouth scored three in the second, two of them unearned, to cut the SHU lead to two. Schmidt pushed the Pioneer lead to 7-3 in the top of the third with a two-run double that chased home Heppner and Olszyk.
A pair of two-run homers by Heppner and Schmidt in the fifth inning extended the Pioneers lead to 12-4. For Heppner, it was his team-leading tenth of the season. Schmidt completed the home run hat trick in the seventh with another two-run blast to center.
