Box Score

TEANECK, NJ - Freshman Matt Fitton (Lebanon, CT) scored three runs and hit his first collegiate home run to help the Sacred Heart baseball team to an 11-10 win over Fairleigh Dickinson in a Northeast Conference game Friday afternoon.

Freshman Chris Whittemore (Lavallette, NJ) drove home the go-ahead runs in the top of the eighth inning, after his team had surrendered an 8-5 lead in the seventh when FDU scored four times to take a 9-8 lead.

The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the first when MJ Schifano (Monroe, NY) doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by JJ Edwards (Endwell, NY). After FDU scored a pair in the bottom of the second to take a 2-1 lead, the Pioneers retook the lead with three in the top of the third. Edwards drove in two of the runs with a double to right center, and Tyler Santos (Johnson City, NY) plated him with a single up the middle.

Sacred Heart extended the lead to 5-2 in the fourth when Fitton singled and later went to third on an errant pickoff throw by FDU pitcher Ben Green. He scored on a sacrifice fly by Whittemore.

FDU got back within a run in the bottom of the fifth when junior outfielder Jeff Vincent and freshman Steven LaForge started the frame with back-to-back singles. The pair then pulled off a double steal to move into scoring position. Zachary Sand made it pay off by delivering a two-out single to left.

Junior Paul Schmidt and Fitton helped the Pioneers take an 8-4 lead in the sixth with back-to-back homers. Schmidt's, his fourth of the year, was a two-run shot to right center that followed a double by Santos. Fitton's solo bomb went to right.

After the Knights got one back in the sixth on an RBI single by Erik Pollag to left center, FDU exploded for four in the seventh. With the sacks full, Matt Maher legged out an infield single chopper to shortstop to drive in one. Freshman designated hitter Joe Martino then roped a double to clear the bases and push the Knights ahead, 9-8.

The three SHU runs in the eighth came on just two hits, thanks to a hit batter, two walks and an FDU error. One of the hits was the go-ahead single by Whittemore and the other a bunt single by Schifano that put SHU up 11-9.

Junior pitcher Ryan Lynch (N. Babylon, NY) who came on in relief with one out in the seventh inning, kept the Knights off the board in the eighth. He walked Martino with one out in the ninth and allowed him to move to third with an error on a pickoff attempt. Martino scored on a grounder by Brian Dillon, who was the second out. Pollag reached with a single up the middle, but Lynch struck out Bryan Dorsey to end the game.

Junior Chris Barthel (Northford, CT) started for the Pioneers and went 6 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs. Lynch picked up the win, his first of the season, with 2 2/3 innings of relief and allowing just one unearned run.

The two teams will continue the four-game series tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at noon.
