BRIDGEPORT, CT (April 24, 2005) - Junior lefthander Chris Aldrich scattered 11 hits en route to a complete game 8-3 win over Wagner College Monday afternoon at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard. The Pioneers take the rubber game of the three-game set with the Seahawks and improve to 12-3 in the Northeast Conference with the win.
Wagner got out of the gates quickly on Aldrich as shortstop Joseph DiGeronimo led off the game with a double down the left field line. Three pitches later, DiGeronimo broke for third and scored the first run of the game when SHU catcher Chris Vartuli's throw wound up in left field.
The Seahawks tacked on another run in the top of the second as centerfielder Nick Papa led off the inning with a single. After advancing to second on a passed ball, Papa stole third and was brought home by Mike Picarello's single to center.
After allowing, a pair of runs on four hits over the first two, Aldrich settled in, throwing seven scoreless innings to let the Pioneer bats come alive. Rightfielder Dan Garcia led off the bottom half of the third with a double to right center. After a walk to leftfielder David Kaloyanides two batters later put two runners on, Garcia would score the first Pioneer run off a Ryan Nemcek single to center. Thirdbaseman Tim Lantz made it 2-2 on a single up the middle to plate Kaloyanides.
The Pioneers played small ball to score a run apiece in the fourth and fifth. Josh Enos led off the fourth with a single in the hole between short and third and moved to second on the sacrifice bunt by Anthony Diaz. Firstbaseman Jay Monti brought him around with a single to right. Second baseman Curtis Lewsey pushed a single through a drawn in Wagner infield in the fifth to score Lantz and give SHU a 4-2 lead.
The SHU offense gave Aldrich two more runs to work with in the sixth when Vartuli belted his third homerun of the year, a two-run shot deep to left center. The Seahawks touched up the junior lefthander for a run in the seventh to cut the lead to 6-3 but Sacred Heart struck right back for two more in the bottom of the eighth on a Nemcek single and Lewsey triple.
Wagner got two on with two outs in the eight, but Aldrich got Papa to ground to second ending the inning. He finished the job in the ninth, giving up a lead off single before striking out Picarello and got Gene Ronkiewicz to fly out to left and DiGeronimo to line out to third to end the game.
The final line on Aldrich was nine innings pitched, 11 hits, three earned runs, one walk and three strikeouts. Lewsey finished 2-of-3 with a triple, two RBI and two runs scores. Vartuli was 2-of-3 with a homer and two runs batted in.
The Seahawks fall to 8-9 in the league and 17-19 overall with the loss.
