TRUMBULL, CT - Senior lefty Jared Balbach (Pine Bush, NY) threw a complete game on the hill and got two RBI apiece from Jeff Heppner (Aqubogue, NY) and John Murphy (Seymour, CT) in support as the Sacred Heart baseball team defeated visiting Mount St. Mary's 5-2 in the opening game of a Northeast Conference doubleheader Saturday.
The Pioneers, 17-20 overall and 8-7 in the NEC, took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI single from Heppner. The hit scored Steve Tedesco (Mission Viejo, CA) who had singled with one out and stole second.
SHU gave Balbach a 2-0 lead in the third when Heppner drove home Tedesco from third with a single to center.
Murphy had the big blow in a three-run fifth inning of Mount starter Mike Matta when he drove home a pair of runs with a single. JJ Edwards (Endwell, NY) plated Murphy with a two-out single to make it 5-0.
The Mountaineers, 15-22 and 9-10, got a pair of runs off Balbach in the top of the sixth on a two-run double by Josh Winter. Winter finished the game a perfect 3-3. Balbach got out of further trouble when he struck out Samm Nott to end the inning and strand Winter in scoring position.
Balbach worked around a one-out single by Michael Foster in the seventh to finish the game. He struck out five and did not walk a batter to raise his record to 5-3.
