BRIDGEPORT, CT - Freshman catcher Stephan Fay had three hits, including a two-run homer in the eighth inning, and four RBI to lead visiting Mount St. Mary's College to an 9-1 win over Sacred Heart University in Northeast Conference baseball Sunday afternoon. The win salvaged one game in the weekend three-game series for the Mountaineers.
The Mount, 18-12 overall and 5-9 in the NEC, took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a bases loaded walk to John DiGirolamo. Sacred Heart, 4-26 and 2-7, tied it in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by sophomore Tim Lantz.
The Mountaineers scored three times in the third on an RBI single by senior Jim Jefferson and two-run double by Fay. They tacked on an unearned run in the top of the sixth after an error by the SHU shortstop and an RBI single by DiGirolamo.
Mount St. Mary starting pitcher Brian Perkins eased through the first five innings allowing just the one run, but started the sixth by allowing a single to freshman Jay Monti and hitting Lantz. Junior Steve Sansone came out of the bullpen and got a double play and a ground out to end the inning.
Fay helped the Mountaineers put the game on ice in a three-run eighth inning when he blasted his two-run shot to left field following a single by Bill Staffieri.
