Final Stats

BRIDGEPORT, CT - Senior hurler Chuck Ristano twirled a complete-game four hitter in the opener, while Dan Scott and Adam Dinihanian (Stratford, CT) combined to throw a three-hitter in the second game to lead the Sacred Heart University Pioneer baseball team to 3-1 and 6-0 wins over visting Mount St. Mary's on Saturday.

Sacred Heart, 4-25 overall and 2-6 in the Northeast Conference, broke the scoring ice in the second inning when sophomore catcher Sean Kammerer blasted a solo homer to left field with two outs off Mount starter Dustin Pease. The Pioneers made it 2-0 in the third on a ground ball by Jamie Schilkowski.

SHU extended its lead to 3-0 with another run in the fourth. Jay Monti led off the inning with a double down the left field line and Tim Lantz sacrificed him to third. Sophomore Dave Kaloyanides drove home the run with a bloop single over a drawn-in infield.

Mount St. Mary's, 17-12 overall and 4-9 in the NEC, got its lone run of the game off Ristano in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Daniel Fowler. The fly scored Jim Jefferson who had singled with one out and gone to third on a double by catcher Adam Schenloff.

Senior Burt Stormes led off the seventh for the Mount by drawing a walk, but Ristano then struck out the next two hitters and got pinch hitter Chad Wolfe to ground to second to end the game.

Ristano allowed just four hits in the complete-game performance, striking out five and walking just one to earn his first win of the season.

The Pioneers broke out on top in the second game as well. Jamie Schilkowski doubled with two outs in the first inning and went to third on an infield hit by Anthony Diaz. Senior Ed Marotta chased Schilkowski home with a single up the middle to give SHU a 1-0 lead.

SHU had a chance to widen the game in the third when Greg Delmonico led off with a single up the middle. Schilkowski followed with a double to deep left to put runners on second and third. Mount starter Steve Stone then struck out Diaz for the first out. The Pioneers put on a squeeze with the next batter, Ed Marotta, but the Mountaineers sniffed it out and pitched out, easily nailing Delmonico at the plate. Marotta then grounded out to third to end the inning.

The Pioneers took a 5-0 lead in the fourth inning with a little help from the Mount defense. Kammerer led off the inning by drawing a walk. Jat Monti layed down a sacrifice bunt attempt that was scooped up by the catcher who threw trying to get Monti at second. His throw sailed into the outfield putting runners on second and third. Lantz then grounded to the third baseman who threw home to get Kammerer, leaving runners on the corners.

Kaloyanides singled up the middle to score Monti and give SHU a 2-0 lead. It looked like the Mountaineers might get out of the inning when Lantz was thrown out trying to steal third, but Jason Maiella followed with a double to right to score Kaloyanides. The Pioneers took a 4-0 lead when Greg Delmonico reached on a throwing error by the third baseman and Maiella scored from second. Schilkowski followed with a single to right to plate the fourth run of the inning, three of them unearned.

Scott went through the first four innings on the mound for SHU, allowing just a first-inning single to Jason Weszka, striking out five and walking two. Dinihanian started the fifth inning for the Pioneers and allowed just two hits in his three innings of work.
