BRIDGEPORT, CT - Senior Chris Zaccherio (Manhasset, NY) threw a complete-game, striking out six, and junior first baseman Rob Griffith (Lake Ronkonkoma, NY) had four hits and an RBI to lead the Sacred Heart baseball team past visiting Central Connecticut State 3-1 in a Northeast Conference game Friday afternoon.
Zaccherio, now 3-3, gave up a homer to left to SHU second baseman Sean Miller-Jones on the first pitch of the game but scattered six Blue Devil hits the rest of the way. Only two Central runners would get in scoring position all day.
The Pioneers, 14-16 overall and 5-4 in the NEC, got a one-out double from Steve Tedesco (Mission Viejo, CA) in the bottom of the first. With two out, Jeff Heppner (Aqubogue, NY) hit a fly ball to center that was blown back toward the infield by a stiff wind coming in from center. CCSU centerfielder Richie Tri raced in after the ball but it fell in front of him for a double, allowing Tedesco to score. Griffith followed with a single to center that scored Heppner after a collision at the plate on the throw home from Tri.
Central Connecticut, 11-12 and 6-7, got an excellent pitching performance from sophomore Jason Foster (Shelton, CT). He went 7 1/3 and was lifted after consecutive singles by Heppner and Griffith in the 8th. Tyler Riordan came on to get the final two outs.
The two teams will square off again tomorrow in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. at Harbor Yard.
