BRIDGEPORT, CT - Senior hurler Jay Monti (Marlboro, NY) allowed just three hits and one run in throwing a complete game to help the Sacred Heart University baseball team defeat Fairleigh Dickinson, 9-1, in the first game of a Northeast Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
FDU got its lone run in the top of the first inning when Chris Grabowski led off the game with a triple to right center. He scored on a ground out Jeff Vincent. Grabowski had the only three hits off Monti in the game.
The Pioneers tied the game in the second inning when Rob Tencza (Meriden, CT) tripled to lead off the frame. He later scored on a wild pitch by FDU starter John Meadus.
SHU opened the game up with six runs in the fourth inning, chasing Meadus. Tencza led off the frame with a single, followed by a walk to Frank Bainer (Prospect, CT). Shortstop Phil Tantillo (Blue Point, NY) then laid down a sacrifice bunt for the Pioneers to advance the runner. Justin Mulrain (Brantford, ONT) followed with an RBI single over a drawn-in infield to make it 2-1. Freshman Steve Tedesco (Mission Viejo, CA) made it 3-0 with a single through the right side, and Jovan Rodriguez (Bronx, NY) drove in two more with a triple to right.
Junior Jeff Hanson (Woodstock, NY) finished the game with three hits for the Pioneers to raise his season average to .383. Monti, who improved to 5-2 with the win, struck out four without issuing a walk.
Meadus took the loss and fell to 2-3.
