BRIDGEPORT, CT - Junior right fielder Paul Christian banged out four hits and drove in three runs, while sophomore reliever Paul Costa (E. Providence, RI) pitched 5 1/3 strong innings out of the bullpen to help the Brown University baseball team defeat Sacred Heart University 12-6 in a non-conference game Thursday night. The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Pioneers.
Brown scored a run in the top of the first off SHU starter Mike Milazzo (Staten Island, NY) when sophomore Bryan Tews doubled to right to right to start the game and went to third on a single to right by Christian. Senior Matt Kutler plated the run with an RBI groundout to first.
Sacred Heart evened it in the bottom of the inning with a little help from the Bears. With Curtis Lewsey (Greenwich, NY) on second and two outs, Josh Enos (Paulsboro, NJ) waved at a pitch for strike three but the ball got away from Brown catcher Devin Thomas. He picked it up to throw Enos out at first but his throw sailed high into right field, allowing Lewsey to score from second.
The Bears took a 5-1 lead in the second, scoring four times with two outs. With two on and two out, Tews was hit with an 0-2 pitch to load the bases. Christian then hit a slow roller down the third base line. The throw from SHU third baseman Tim Lantz pulled first baseman Chris Howard off the bag, allowing two runs to score on the infield hit. Kutler and junior Danny Hughes followed with RBI singles.
Brown starter, freshman Robert Wood, making his first collegiate appearance for the Bears, was knocked out of the game in the third inning with two outs, two on and two runs in for the Pioneers. Wood walked two and hit one in the inning, yielding an RBI single by Enos and sacrifice fly to the left field was by junior Tony Diaz to get SHU within 5-3.
With the bases loaded and two outs, Costa came on in relief for Brown. Costa gave up a ground rule double to right to the first batter he faced, Chris Howard, that tied the score at 5-5.
Brown loaded the bases with no one out in the fourth on a pair of singles sandwiched around a walk. Milazzo walked Kutler with the sacks full to score senior Bobby Wiginton, who had led off the frame with a single. Milazzo then gave up a bases-loaded walk to Kutler and a two run single to Thomas, ending his day but not before Brown had a 9-5 lead.
Sacred Heart got a run back in the fifth when sophomore Jay Monti (Marlboro, NY) ripped a one-out single that scored Lewsey, who had led off the inning with a single, from second.
Brown got two unearned runs in the seventh off Pioneer reliever George Lamar (Briarcliff, NY). Lamar hit leadoff hitter James Lowe with a pitch. A sacrifice bunt attempt by senior Chris Contrino was misplayed by the SHU catcher, putting runners on the corner with no outs. Lowe scored on a groundout by Wiginton and Christian drove home the second with his fourth hit of the evening.
Costa, now 1-0, threw 5 1/3 innings and allowed just one run on four hits for the Bears. Hughes also had a big game for Brown with three hits and two runs knocked in, while Kutler had a pair of hits and three RBI.
