BROOKLYN, NY - Chris Whittemore had a two-run single in the fifth inning to drive in the eventual winning run, and senior Jared Balbach went the route on the hill to give the SHU baseball team a 6-5 win in the opening game of a Northeast Conference doubleheader at LIU on Saturday. LIU won the nightcap, 8-5.
Sacred Heart, 11-16 overall and 3-4 in NEC play, got a two-run homer from junior Mike Drowne in the top of the second inning to take a 3-1 lead in the opener for Balbach. LIU, 8-19 and 5-6, tied the game on a two-run double by Greg Desantis in the bottom of the third.
The Pioneers took the lead back in the fourth when freshman John Murphy drove home Drowne, who had reached on a fielder's choice and stole second. It was his team-leading 17th steal of the season.
Whittemore's single in the fifth followed Rob Griffith's leadoff walk and Hunter Phillips reaching on an error that put runners on the corners. Phillips went to second on a passed ball.
LIU got two in the bottom of the fifth on singles by Desantis and Drew Walsh, but Balbach retired the next five straight and got the final two outs on a double play ball in the bottom of the seventh. The win lifted Balbach's record to 4-2.
The Blackbirds jumped on SHU starter Corey Corcoran for six runs in the first three innings of the second game to open a 6-2 lead. They would extend it to 8-2 before Drowne launched a three-run shot in the seventh to make it closer.
The two teams will complete the four-game series on Sunday at 1 pm.
