NEW BRITAIN, CT - Junior Jeff Heppner had four hits, including his sixth homer of the season, to lead a 22-hit Sacred Heart attack as the Pioneers eased past Central Connecticut 18-4 on Thursday night.
The Pioneers got to CCSU starter Todd Savatsky for five runs in the first inning, highlighted by a three-run blast by freshman Mike Olszyk. It was his fifth round tripper of the year for the Pioneers, who improved to 11-16-1 overall and 2-3 in the Northeast Conference with the win. Heppner and Tyler Santos recorded RBI singles in the inning.
SHU starter Matt Fitton kept the Blue Devils off the scoreboard in the first three innings, but a two-run single up the middle by Richie Tri cut the Pioneer lead to 5-2. Central Connecticut cut it to 5-3 on a sacrifice fly by senior Casey Walko in the fifth inning.
Paul Schmidt got the run back for the Pioneers in the sixth with an RBI single that scored Heppner who had led off the inning with a double, making it 6-3.
After the Blue Devils made it 6-4 with a run in the bottom of the sixth, SHU scored three times in the seventh on an RBI triple by Phil Tantillo and Heppner's home run.
The finishing blow came in the top of the eighth when SHU put up nine runs on eight hits, a hit batter, a wild pitch and one big Central Connecticut error. The big shot in the inning came of the bat of Schmidt, a grand slam homer to right.
Fitton worked the first five innings for the Pioneers and allowed three runs on seven hits to raise his season record to 4-2. Chris Zaccherio pitched the final four innings to earn his second save of the year.
The two teams will hook up for a doubleheader tomorrow at Beehive Field in New Britain beginning at 10 AM.
