Box Score

BRIDGEPORT, CT - Sophomore Anthony Diaz drove home the winning run with a bunt single in the bottom of the seventh, and the Sacred Heart bullpen pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings to lead the Pioneers to a 5-4 win over visiting Pace University on Tuesday.

Pace took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a two-out RBI double by sophomore Mike Pahira. The Setters made it 4-0 in the fourth when they led off the inning with four consecutive hits. Freshman Nick Czekaj led off with a double and scored when Rob Faist followed with a single. Pahira then doubled to chase home Faist and he scored on a single by freshman Matt Bisbano.

The Pioneers put up three runs in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Pace starting pitcher Matt Reilly walked freshman Pete Kandybowicz and then hit SHU catcher Sean Kammerer. Sophomore Dave Kaloyanides singled to drive home Kandybowicz. Reilly walked Jason Maiella to load the bases and Anthony Diaz singled to left to drive home one run. The ball was booted by the outfielder that allowed a second run to score.

Sacred Heart tied the game in the bottom of the seventh inning on an RBI bunt single by Diaz that scored Kammerer, who led off the inning with a single. Reilly was lifted after the bunt in favor of freshman Tom Parry. Parry walked Jamie Schilkowski (Shelton, CT) to load the bases and hit Curtis Lewsey to give the Pioneers a 5-4 lead.

Pace threatened in the top of the eighth. Pahira led off with a windblown-double to right and Bisbano sacrificed him to third. The Pioneers pulled the infield in and JC Pullam hit sharp one-hopper to Schilkowski to first who wheeled and cut down Pahira at the plate.

Junior Paul Bonaros led off the ninth for Pace with a single up the middle off SHU closer Robert Duell. Mike Ferrauto failed to get the bunt down twice and then took a called third strike for the first out. Doug Hehner reached on a error by the shortstop to put two on. The next batter grounded out slowly to second base and both runners advanced. Duell struck out Faist swinging to end the game.
