TRUMBUL, CT - Ryan Kresky hit a two-run homer in the top of the ninth off SHU starter Chris Barthel to lead the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights to a 4-2 win over the Pioneers and salvage a split of a Northeast Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
Freshman Robert Griffith (Lake Ronkonkoma, NY) gave the Pioneers a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third with a solo homer to left off FDU starter John Meadus. Steve Tedesco followed with a single up the middle and went to second on a sacrifice bunt. Mike Drowne singled to short to put runners on the corners and senior Ryan Lynch grounded out to short, scoring Tedesco to make it 2-0.
FDU, 6-14 and 1-1, got a run back in the top of the fourth on back-to-back doubles by Brian Dillon and Joe Martino to leadoff the inning. The Pioneers got out of trouble when Martino was doubled off second on a liner to center hit by catcher Erik Pollag.
The Knights tied the game in the top of the sixth when Zach Sand reached on an error to open the inning and then stole second. He scored on a double by Pollag with one out. Barthel came back to get the next two batters on a groundout to third and one back to the mound.
With one out in the ninth, Barthel hit Matt Holsman with a pitch and Kresky followed by hitting a 2-0 Barthel fastball over the left field fence to give the Knights a 5-3 lead. Chris Zaccherio came out of the bullpen and struck out two straight batters to end the inning.
Senior John Meadus went the distance on the hill for the Knights, striking out two and walking three. He improves to 5-3. Barthel took the loss to fall to 0-4.
The Pioneers, 9-13-1 and 1-1, will complete the series with a doubleheader with FDU on Sunday starting at noon at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport.
