TRUMBULL, CT - Sophomore Matt Fitton (Lebanon, CT) tossed a complete game, while senior catcher Jeff Heppner (Aquebogue, NY) had a pair of hits, including his fifth homer of the season, to lead the Sacred Heart University baseball team to a 7-4 win over visiting Fairleigh Dickinson University in the Northeast Conference opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon.
FDU scored twice in the first inning, taking advantage of a pair of Pioneer errors. The Pioneers got one back on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Santos that scored Mike Drowne, who had led off the inning with a walk.
Senior Ryan Lynch got the Pioneers even in the bottom of the third with his first homer of the season, a deep shot into the teeth of winds gusting to 30 mph. The Knights took the lead back in the top of the fifth when Matt Holsman led off the frame with a single, went to second on an errant pickoff throw and later scored on an RBI single by catcher Scott Morrison.
Another blast tied the score for the Pioneers when catcher Jeff Heppner lined a homer over the left field fence in the bottom of the sixth. After the Knights recorded out, the Pioneers loaded the bases on a walk and a pair of singles. Mike Drowne gave SHU a 5-3 lead with a single to right, ending the day for FDU starter Ben Green.
The Pioneers picked up a couple of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth when Mike Drowne singled to lead off the inning and later came home on a bloop single to left by senior Jeff Hanson. Heppner made it 7-3 when he ripped a two-out double to left that scored pinch runner Robert Griffith.
Fitton got through the game throwing just 98 pitches, raising his season mark to 3-2. Green took the loss for FDU and fell to 0-4.
