NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Sacred Heart baseball team built a 5-1 lead at Iona on a rainy Wednesday afternoon at Iona College, but the Gael scored three times in the eighth to tie the game, where it would end in a 5-5 tie. Darkness and poor field conditions forced the game to be called in the 10th inning.
Junior Corey Corcoan (Norwich, CT) made just his second collegiate start for the Pioneers and threw the first three innings, allowing just one run on three hits.
Freshman Hunter Phillips (Monroe, CT) gave his starter a 2-0 lead in the second inning with a two-run single up the middle with the bases loaded and two outs. A wild pitch to the next batter put SHU up 3-0.
Iona got one run back in the bottom of the inning, but Phillips made it 4-1 in the fourth with another RBI single. Mike Drowne followed with an RBI double that chased Robert Griffith home with the fifth Pioneer run.
The Gaels got to freshman reliever James Ineson for three runs in the eighth inning.
The Pioneers will resume play on Friday when they start a four-game weekend Northeast Conference series against Fairleigh Dickinson.
