BRIDGEPORT, CT - Curt Szado had a pair of hits and three RBI, while freshman Devin Barnett pitched seven solid innings to lead the University of Massachusetts baseball team to a 9-2 win over Sacred Heart University Tuesday afternoon.

Sacred Heart, 1-18, took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on back-to-back triples by Ed Marotta and Rob Tenzca (Meriden, CT).

UMass, which evened its record at 7-7, scored three times in the fourth inning. After loading the bases with no one out, Matt Reynolds lifted a sacrifice fly to right to tie the game. Szado followed with a two-run single to right to give the Minutemen a 3-1 lead.

The Pioneers loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a pair of walks Barnett and a single by Tim Lantz. Barnett got Jamie Schilkowski looking for the second out but then hit Brian Rojee with an 0-2 pitch to force home a run. Barnett got Josh Enos to pop out to the catcher on the first pitch to retire the side and preserve the UMass lead.

The Minutemen broke the game open in the eighth inning with five unearned runs, thanks to a pair of Pioneer errors on the infield. Frank Curreri and Bill Rankin had RBI singles in the frame.
