WEST HARTFORD, CT - Bobby Gorski hit a grand slam homer to left field off SHU reliever Mike Olszyk in the bottom of the eighth inning to help the University of Hartford comeback to defeat the Pioneers 8-4 in the opening game of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
The Pioneers led 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh with two outs, when Phil Tantillo dropped a popup to shallow left off the bat of Eric Walked that would have ended the game. Two runs scored on the play and the Hawks took the game to extra innings tied 4-4.
SHU, 7-12, took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on RBI singles by Tyler Santos and Olszyk. The Hawks, 3-12, tied it on Mike Amendola two-run shot to left center in the bottom of the inning.
A Frank Bainer sacrifice fly and a Tantillo RBI single gave the Pioneers a 4-2 lead in the third for starter Chris Barthel. Barthel worked 7 1/3 innings and allowed just four hits, two of them infield hits, while striking out eight and walking three.
Tantillo and Santos each had three hits for SHU, which has now dropped five straight games.
