FAIRFIELD, CT - The Fairfield University baseball team scored three runs with two outs in the first inning off SHU starter Ryan Lynch and Fairfield starter Sam Robertson made them stand up with eight strong innings as the Stags edged the visiting Pioneers, 3-2.
Robertson allowed just three hits and two runs from the Pioneers in his eight innings, striking out ten and walking two. He retired the first 11 batters he faced until senior Tyler Santos singled with two outs in the fourth inning.
The story for the Pioneers was the bullpen. After Lynch worked the first two innings, freshman James Ineson came on in the third for his first collegiate appearance. He worked four scoreless innings, allowing no hits and one walk while striking out three. Junior Corey Corcoran blanked the Stags in the seventh and eighth.
The Pioneers got their runs in the seventh when Santos led off with a walk and went to second on a base hit by Jeff Heppner. A Robertson wild pitch moved both runners up and they both scored on consecutive sacrifice flies from Paul Schmidt and Mike Olszyk.
Justin Servino pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his third save of the year for Fairfield, now 7-9.
