YAPHANK, NY - Senior Jay Monti (Marlboro, NY) tossed six scoreless innings in a 2-0 win in the opener of the Pioneer doubleheader against Brown University on Thursday, while senior Chris Howard (Ghent, NY) came back to throw a complete-game in a 5-3 win in the nightcap to help Sacred Heart take a pair of games from the Brown University Bears.
Monti, 3-0, threw the first six innings in the opener, allowing four hits and striking out four. He has now thrown 25 innings this season with allowing an earned run. Senior George Lamar (Briarcliff, NY) picked up his first save of the season by striking out the side in the seventh.
The Pioneers got the only run they would need in the first inning when freshman Steve Tedesco (Mission Viejo, CA) led off the inning with a single, went to second on a wild pitch, and later scored on an error on a ball hit to third by junior Jeff Hanson (Woodstock, NY).
SHU, 6-8, got an insurance run in the third on a sacrifice fly by Jovan Rodriguez (Bronx, NY) that score Phil Tantillo (Blue Point, NY) who had singled to lead off the inning and then stole second.
In the second game, SHU took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on RBI doubles by Hanson and Jay Maiella (N. Haledon, NJ).
Brown, 1-8, tied the game in the second inning, but senior Rob Tencza (Meriden, CT) gave the Pioneers the lead back with a solo homer in the bottom of the inning.

The Pioneers took a 5-1 lead in the fifth on a two-run double by Hanson.
Howard, now 2-2, allowed six hits and struck out seven batters. It was his first complete game of the season.
