BRIDGEPORT, CT - Sophomore Greg Delmonico (Brewster, NY) drove home a pair of runs in the second game, while junior hurler Eric Bushor (Uncasville, CT) allowed just four hits while going the distance to help Sacred Heart to a 4-2 win and a Northeast Conference doubleheader split with Wagner College on Saturday afternoon. Wagner won the first game, 3-1.

The first contest was decided with one swing of the bat. Sophomore designated hitter Kane Furst (E. Stroudsburg, PA) smashed a 2-2 pitch by SHU starter Dan Scott over the left field fence for a three-run homer with two outs in the third inning. Junior righty Jon Polonoitza (Cranford, NJ) made the runs stand up, holding Sacred Heart to just two hits while striking out six.

Scott, who dropped to 0-4, pitched well with the exception of the one long ball. He allowed just four hits and struck out nine batters.

Wagner, now 2-11 overall and 1-1 in the NEC, scored a pair of unearned runs in the first inning of game two. Freshman Jared Williams led off the game by reaching on an error and went to second when senior Bryan Distefano followed with a single to right. Chris Dick then struck out, but both runners were on the move and executed a double steal. Furst drove home the first run with a sacrifice fly to left, and freshman Nick Papa followed with a single to center to drive in the second.

Sacred Heart, 4-8 overall and 1-1 in the conference, got the runs back in the bottom of the inning. Delmonico drove home one with a single, and freshman Anthony Diaz (Middletown, NY) the other with an RBI double down the left field line.

The score stayed that way until the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out, sophomore Joe Santacroce (Bridgeport, CT) picked up his second single of the game off Seahawk starter Mike McTamney (Toms River, NJ). Freshman Jason Maiella (N. Haledon, NJ) followed with a double to left to put runners on second and third.

Delmonico was next and missed on a bunt attempt. Santacroce was caught off third and a throw by the catcher was misplayed by the Wagner third baseman and the ball squirted into the outfield, allowing Santacroce to score and Maiella to advance. Delmonico then executed a squeeze bunt that scored Maiella and give the Pioneers and insurance run.

Bushor, now 2-1, allowed just the two unearned runs. He struck out eight, while walking four. The loss dropped McTamney to 0-3.

The two teams will complete the three-game series with a single game tomorrow at noon.
