STORRS, CT - Third baseman Mike Olt had a pair of doubles, a homer and four runs batted in to help the University of Connecticut baseball team come back to defeat visiting Sacred Heart 9-2 on Sunday afternoon.
Sacred Heart, 4-8, scored a run in the top of the fifth to take a 2-1 lead behind starter Corey Corcoran (Norwich, CT). UConn, 10-5, got the run back in the bottom of the inning when Billy Ferriter reach on an error to start the frame, went to second on a single by Ryan Moore and later scored on a wild pitch.
The Huskies took a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth after back-to-back doubles from Olt and Mike Nemeth. Freshman John Hermanson (Milford, CT) came out of the bullpen to retire the Huskies without further damage.
After getting the leadoff hitter in the bottom of the sixth, Hermanson gave up a single, a walk and then the Olt homer to left center to give UConn a 6-2 lead.
In the meantime, UConn hurler Matt Barnes set the Pioneers down in order in the sixth and seventh. Reliever Scott Oberg pitched the eighth and worked out of trouble after giving off a leadoff pinch hit double to Chris Whittemore (Lavellette, NJ).
Olt had a two-run double in the bottom of the eighth off reliever James Ineson (Milford, CT) to put the game on ice.
The Pioneers will be back in action on Tuesday at Harbor Yard against Fairfield starting at 3 pm.
