STORRS, CT - Senior Jeff Heppner (Aqubogue, NY) and junior Mike Drowne (S. Hadley, MA) each homered to lead a 14-hit Pioneer attack to help the Sacred Heart baseball team defeat the University of Connecticut 11-8 Saturday afternoon.
Heppner's shot was a two-run blast to right center in the first inning, scoring Chris Whittemore who had singled ahead of it, to give SHU a 2-0 lead.
The Huskies, now 9-5, scored three times in the second off SHU starter Chris Zaccherio to take a 3-2 lead it would carry through three innings.
The Pioneers, 4-7, exploded for six runs in the top of the fourth, chasing UConn starter Greg Nappo from the game. Whittemore and Heppner started the frame with singles and JJ Edwards loaded the bases with a bunt fielder's choice. Mike Olszyk drew a bases loaded walk to force home Whittemore and tie the score. Rocco Gondek drove home the go-ahead run with a single and Drowne put the exclamation mark on the inning with a grand slam.
UConn got single runs back in the fourth and fifth to cut the SHU lead to 8-5. Drowne singled to lead off the Pioneer sixth, went to second on a hit by Steve Tedesco and third on a wild pitch. Whittemore drove him in with a groundout to give the Pioneers a four-run edge.
Zaccherio threw the first six innings and gave way to freshman Troy Scribner who threw the final three innings to earn his second collegiate save.
The two teams will square off in the final game of the series tomorrow in Storrs at noon. Senior Corey Corcoran will get the start for the Pioneers.
