BRIDGEPORT, CT - Sophomore pitcher Dusty Odenbach allowed just one run and four hits in six innings of work, and the UConn Husky hitters took advantage of nine walks and three errors to beat Sacred Heart University 7-2 Tuesday afternoon.
UConn, 7-8, scored three times in the first on two hits. One of the runs was unearned when SHU catcher Phil Riggio dropped a popup in foul territory by Mike Nemeth on what would have been the third out of the inning. SHU starter Jared Balbach ended up walking Nemeth to load the bases and the walked Doug Elliot to force in a run.
The Huskies took a 3-0 lead in the second on an RBI single by Dan Mahoney that scored Pierre LePage who had singled and then stole second. UConn broke it open with three runs in the fifth with just one hit. Pioneer reliever Mick Oswald walked two and hit one in the frame, and UConn got help from the third Pioneer error of the game.
Odenbach cruised through five shutout innings but finally gave up a run in the bottom of the sixth when Matt Fitton singled to lead off. He went to second on a ground out and advanced to third on a single by MJ Schiafano. Fitton scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-1.
UConn got the run back in the bottom of the inning thanks to a pair of walks by reliever Chris Zaccherio, followed by an RBI single from Peter Fatse.
SHU, 1-13, got its second run in the seventh when Ryan Lynch walked to lead off the inning and went to second on a groundout. A single by Phil Tantillo put runners at the corners with one out. With Chris Whittemore at the plate, Tantillo was picked off and Lynch scampered home as Tantillo was tagged out in a rundown.
