DARIEN, CT - Mike Olt blasted a three-run homer in a five-run fifth inning to help the University of Connecticut baseball team come back to defeat Sacred Heart 7-6 Tuesday after noon in a game played at Darien High School.
After UConn (7-7) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third off SHU start Mick Oswald on sacrifice fly by Nick Ahmed, the Pioneers erupted for five in the bottom of the frame. MJ Schifano drove home one with a sacrifice fly, scoring Steve Tedesco who had singled and advanced on a throwing error by UConn pitcher Matt Barnes. Junior Jeff Heppner drove home another with a single and freshman Mike Olszyk drove in two more with a two-out single. The fifth run scored on a Barnes wild pitch.
Oswald rolled through the first four innings and left with a 5-1 lead. The Huskies took the 6-5 lead in the fifth off SHU relievers Tim Groth and Bobby Sheperd. Groth was charged with four of the runs. Olt was the first batter Shepherd faced and the junior launched his homer over the left centerfield wall.
With UConn lead 7-5 in the bottom of the seventh, the Pioneers got one of the runs back on a bases loaded walk from reliever Dusty Odenbach. The Husky reliever dug in, however, and struck out Olszyk and pinch hitter Mike Drowne to end the threat.
The Pioneers had one more chance to tie it in the bottom of the eighth when Tedesco singled and Schifano walked, sending Pioneer power hitter Jeff Hanson to the plate. Odenbach got him to ground to second on a 2-2 count to end the inning.
David Erickson pitched a perfect ninth to earn his second save of the season.
The loss dropped the Pioneers to 5-7 on the season and they will be off before heading to Maine for a pair of doubleheaders this weekend.
