WINTER HAVEN, FL - The Sacred Heart baseball offense continued its torrid spring hitting blasting four homers to beat Vermont 10-4 on Saturday. Freshman Mike Olszyk (Hamden, CT) had two of them, his first as a collegiate player.
After the Catamounts scored one in the top of the first, senior Jeff Hanson (Woodstock, NY) got the Pioneers even in the bottom of the frame with a solo blast - his sixth of the year. Olszyk put SHU ahead in the second with an RBI single that scored Paul Schmidt (Amityville, NY), who had doubled with one out.
SHU broke it open in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three times after the first two batters of the frame recorded out. Freshman Hunter Phillips (Monroe, CT) and Tantillo singled and Steve Tedesco (Mission Viejo, CA) then laced a single to scored Phillips. Senior Ryan Lynch (N. Babylon, NY) walked to load the bases and Hanson reached on a throwing error by the Vermont shortstop that scored two more.
Olszyk hit his first, a solo shot off Vermont starter Justin Albert in the bottom of the fifth. His second came in the seventh, following a leadoff bomb from junior Jeff Heppner (Aqubogue, NY). Heppner played his first two collegiate seasons for the Catamounts.
The Pioneers finish up their spring trip on Sunday against Army at 11 AM.
